The West African Francophone Universities Alumni (WAFUA) has expressed deep concern regarding the recent statement credited to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, discrediting universities accredited by the governments and education ministries of Benin Republic and Togo.
At a press conference in Abuja, WAFUA questioned the Minister’s motives, suggesting that his declaration might be an attempt to tarnish the reputation of these institutions for personal gain, possibly to curry favor with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu amidst rumors of a cabinet reshuffle.
WAFUA also criticized the Minister’s statement that only individuals aged 18 and above are eligible for higher education, citing its contradiction to the established 6-3-3-4 education system. This, the body argued, indicates that the Minister is out of touch with current realities. It urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene promptly, as graduates from these countries face potential job loss and livelihood threats due to the Minister’s hasty generalization.
