Viral video shows traditionalist chasing cows out of Ondo community

Hundreds of cows were on Friday allegedly chased out of Idanre community in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State by some youths suspected to be traditionalists in the town.

In a 30 seconds video watched by our correspondent, the traditionalists were seeing tying white wrapper in front of the cows, which gave the impression that they were leading the cows out of the town.

A female voice in the video said in Idanre dialect, “These are the cows in the town. They are too many. God, thank you. Idanre has gained freedom.”

However, the secretary to the traditional ruler of the town, Mr Agbelusi Ganiyu, denied that the community used juju to send herders out of the community. He said the people dressed in white attire were the priests of a deity known as Orosun (Aworos).

Agbelusi explained that Orosun was a fertility goddess and it was the period for its adherents to celebrate the festival on Idanre Hills.

He said, “Orosun was a woman while alive. She did not have any child but was capable of making others get pregnant. When she died, the people started worshipping her. They held the festival on the hill.

“The adherents came down from the hill and were dancing round the town. It was a security outfit that had a scuffle with the herders. It had nothing to with the Orosun worshippers. They were going on their own and the cattle were walking on the streets.”
