THE Nigeria Police Force says it has summoned a yet-to-be-identified orderly, who was seen in a video posted on social media, allegedly carrying a food tray for a former Nigerian ambassador to the Republic of Netherlands, Nimota Akanbi.
Describing the situation as embarrassing and unprofessional, the Force Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the policeman had been identified and summoned to Abuja for questioning, adding that the police authorities frown against such an act.
Adejobi said, “He (the policeman) has been identified. He is coming to Abuja to meet us. We’ll ask questions from him and take necessary action.
“We need to discourage such a thing because it is embarrassing the image of the Force and we can’t continue to be experiencing that kind of a thing because it is highly unprofessional.”
Reacting to the development, Akanbi, in a statement she made available to one of our correspondents on Wednesday, denied the act.
She claimed that the policeman was carrying his own food at a community engagement they both attended in Ilorin, Kwara State.
“The truth is that I allowed him (police orderly) to pick his food. I am a teacher and disciplinarian,” she said.
Akanbi, who is also the chairman of the Governing Board of National Secondary School Education, urged Nigerians to disregard the viral video, saying that it might be the handiwork of her detractors.
She said she understood the importance and nature of the work of security operatives, adding that she would never do anything to demean them.
In the viral video, the policeman attached to Akanbi, while being dressed in his official uniform, was seen carrying a tray crowded with food behind her at a function.
Nigerians have been condemning the policeman’s action, with some lamenting that the security personnel abandoned his official duty to act as a maid for Akanbi.
