Justice Polycarp Hamman of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU to suspend its over seven month strike
In delivering his decision Wednesday, the judge said the untold damage inflicted by the prolonged strike by the University lecturers was massive and it was in the national interest to have academic activities resume.
The National Industrial Court said the action of ASUU is in breach of Section 18 (1) of the Trade Disputes Act which says that neither the employer nor the worker should embark on a strike when a dispute has been referred to the National Industrial Court for redress.
It will be recalled that Nigeria’s University lecturers’ union had declared an indefinite strike on 29 August, the height of an industrial action which commenced on 14 February.
