Aiyedatiwa grants state pardon to 43 inmates

Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted state pardon to no fewer than 43 inmates serving jail terms across the various correctional centres in the state.

The clemency by the governor was given to commemorate his inauguration on Monday, as well as his efforts in sustaining and enhancing reformative justice in the state.

With eight of the convicts regaining immediate freedom, 15 inmates on death row had their death sentences commuted to various jail terms, while the remaining 20 had their terms adjusted.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the move by Aiyedatiwa was hinged on the recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy headed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state.

He said: “In a significant act of compassion and justice, the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has announced the extension of grace and mercy to 43 convicts.

“This momentous decision was made to commemorate Governor Aiyedatiwa’s swearing-in today, reflecting his commitment to reformative justice and humane governance.

“The governor’s action aligns with his ongoing efforts to address issues within the penal system and to promote the reintegration of individuals into society as productive members.”
